Chicken Palak Recipe

Chicken Palak (Spinach Chicken) is a popular North Indian dish that combines tender chicken pieces with rich and flavorful spinach gravy. This dish is packed with nutrients and perfect for those looking for a healthy yet delicious meal.

Ingredients:

  • Chicken: 500 grams, boneless, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Spinach: 300 grams, washed and chopped
  • Onions: 2 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomatoes: 2 medium, pureed
  • Ginger-Garlic Paste: 1 tablespoon
  • Green Chilies: 2, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • Cumin Seeds: 1 teaspoon
  • Garam Masala: 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander Powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric Powder: ½ teaspoon
  • Red Chili Powder: ½ teaspoon (adjust to taste)
  • Fresh Cream: ¼ cup (optional, for garnishing)
  • Oil: 3 tablespoons
  • Salt: to taste
  • Water: as needed
  • Lemon Juice: 1 tablespoon
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves: for garnishing

Method:

  • Boil the spinach in boiling water for 2 minutes, then immediately transfer it to ice-cold water. This process helps retain the spinach’s vibrant green colour.
  • After cooling down, puree the spinach until smooth and set aside.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan over medium heat. Next, add the chicken pieces and season them with a pinch of salt and a dash of turmeric. Cook until the chicken is golden brown and almost fully cooked. Then, take out the chicken and set it aside..
  • Pour the remaining oil into the pan. When it’s hot, sprinkle the cumin seeds and let them crackle.
  • Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  • Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chillies, cooking until the raw smell disappears.
  • Stir in the tomato puree and simmer until the oil visibly separates from the mixture.
  • Sprinkle in the coriander powder, red chilli powder, and garam masala. Cook for another minute.
  • Return the chicken pieces to the pan. Thoroughly combine the ingredients to guarantee the chicken is evenly coated with the aromatic spices.
  • Add the spinach puree and some water (depending on the desired consistency). Stir well and simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavours to meld together.
  • Add salt to your preference and a splash of fresh lemon juice.
  • For a smoother consistency, gently mix in fresh cream just before removing from the heat.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
